INTENT

To ensure all pupils:

• develop their designing and making skills
• develop their ability to create high quality products
• develop knowledge and understanding of technological processes, products and their manufacture
• work independently and with others, listening to others’ ideas and treating these with respect
• find enjoyment, satisfaction and purpose through designing and making
• develop language skills through questioning, describing and explaining, presenting their ideas in a variety of ways
• apply cross curricular skills e.g. ICT, Art, Maths, Science, PSHE

IMPLEMENTATION

• Children enjoy constructing, making and creating from an early age. By the end of the Early Years Foundation stage, children at the expected level of development should be able to safely use and explore a variety of materials, tools and techniques, experimenting with colour, design, texture, form and function and share their creations, explaining the process they have used. Teachers will also support and facilitate children to use props and materials when role playing characters in narratives and stories. The beginning of Design and Technology teaching will be facilitated through the craft areas within the continuous provision provided within the Early Years environment and imaginative storytelling and role-playing opportunities. During Key Stage 1, children will continue to develop and enhance these skills through a variety of practical and creative activities and opportunities to design and make products. They will learn about mechanisms, structures, textiles and food, evaluating the use and effectiveness of their finished designs. We plan the activities in design and technology so that children build upon prior learning (e.g. such as the ability to evaluate existing products and advertisements, create ‘eye-catching’ designs). We give children of all abilities the opportunity to develop their skills, knowledge and understanding through a practical Design and Technology curriculum with opportunities to work together with their peers.
